Welcome to Porthill Class

We have been doing lots of great activities for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. For our art lessons we have been improving our drawing skills by sketching out the facial features of a skull. Today we traced and then drew our own portraits inspired by the artist Julian Opie. We have been learning about position and direction in Maths and played a game to direct one class mate correctly to another. In science we have been learning about everyday materials, we have been describing objects using the correct vocabulary. In groups we made a suitable house for the Three Little Pigs, using straws, Lego and sticks. We then came back together to see how strong our houses were when a big gust of wind came! The group who used the Lego won! We also loved taking part in a our trial for 'Now Press Play', it was great listening to and taking part in a story. What a busy few weeks! Amazing work everyone, we are so proud of you! :)

Today we recapped on contractions, we are learning to understand how to write words as contractions and write them in an expanded form. Please ask your child to give you some examples, they worked very hard this morning, well done everyone! :)

In Maths we are learning about measuring in centimetres and metres. We measured objects around the classroom and understand why we need to start at 0.

During our cool challenge time, the children made fairy tale story puppets and created their own story. We have been learning about the features of different fairy tales, comparing Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood.

We hope you've had a lovely Easter break. We have had a great first week back! Our new Darwin Value for this half term is Stickability. I'm sure if you ask your child about this, they can tell you all about it. It was great fun making windmills and we didn't give up!

KS1 Recycling Assembly. Today we learned about the importance of recycling and where different household waste goes. Your child will bring home a pack of colouring pencils and a colouring sheet as part of a competition.

Africa Afternoon! We had great fun making African masks and necklaces. We recapped on what we have learned about Africa and learned some new information too.

Super reading once again!

For Design and Technology this week we made a healthy wrap, we tried different combinations of food to see what we liked and didn't like. They were delicious!

Nesscliffe trip! We had a great time, the children did amazing!

The children really enjoyed learning about 2D and 3D shapes properties. We have been learning about how many sides each 2D shape has and what vertices are. I wonder if your child can tell you at home about what they have learned.

World Book Day- We had great fun creating our story spuds, well done everyone! A photo to show all of our entries.

We have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. In groups we matched up the shapes and names correctly, described shapes in our magic bag and sorted shapes correctly. Super teamwork!

The week we have been learning about our new Darwin Value Growthability for this half term. We created hot air balloons to write about what we are proud of and what we can't do yet. As a class we discussed that it is okay to not to know everything and that we need to practise to get better at things.

We have been busy in Art last week using clay and creating our own art inspired by Clarice Cliff’s Circle Tree.

We worked as a class to find equal groups in our problems.

We had a great week learning all about Africa. The children tried different foods and voted for their favourite one, we even had a go at playing some African drums!

This week in PSHE we have been learning about what it means to be a good neighbour. As a class we talked about what you can do to be a good neighbour. We worked together in pairs to think of positive solutions to different problems.

Well done to the children who received their reading prize. Great effort with reading at home!

This week we have been very busy in History. We have been learning all about the about the Royal Family. As a group we ordered a timeline and discussed important events about Queen Elizabeth II.

This half term our Darwin Value is Bouncebackability. Porthill class began 'Inventors' and created their own paper aeroplane! They had to use the ability to bounceback when investigating how their paper aeroplanes worked.

Our Elf has been busy having a house point bath and reading stories to our teddies.

This week we had a really special arrival! We have been sent an Elf to enjoy December with us, it arrived without a name so we had a vote to decide, his name is Buddy!

In Science we became mini beast explorers! We searched for habitats and discussed why some habitats are more suited to different mini beasts than others.

In History we have been learning about Charles Darwin. Today we went off into the forest and became mini Darwins! We observed nature and sketched four different things.

In Music we have created a soundscape. We used our body parts to make music that represented the piece of music we listened to. Excellent partner work!

In English we have planned our own diary entry about a day on the moon inspired by the story “The Man on the Moon”

We have had some excellent home learning shared this week! Well done everyone!
